customLogo  Everyone has a story to tell. As a licensed professional counselor, I’ve been privileged to hear the stories of many people, and I’m always fascinated to learn more about the experiences that shape us all into who we are today. Often, people don’t even realize how interesting their story is. How many of us, though, would love to know more about the things our parents, grandparents, and other loved ones experienced in their lifetimes?

2. anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor: the legacy of ancient Rome.

3. an applicant to or student at a school that was attended by his or her parent.

What kind of legacy would you like to leave for your future generations? What would you like for them to know about what life’s experiences have taught you? Having your personal history (or the history of another person/group/organization) recorded for yourself and for future generations can be a wonderful gift.

The Process:

To begin your legacy project, I will provide a general questionnaire to be completed with basic information that will help me conduct further research and prepare to conduct your interview(s). After gathering this information, I will work with you to set up the interview(s), which will be audio-recorded. Prior to the interview, you will be encourage to gather mementos that may serve as memory aids or additions to your projects (old journals, photographs, etc.)

Once interviews are completed, there are options available regarding what step you would like to take next. If you would like to receive the audio recording of the interview as the final project, this is an option. Otherwise, the audio recording will be transcribed with general editing, to be used in your format of choice. You may choose to receive the transcribed interview in the form of a memoir (generally a more personal, relaxed feel, in which the topics go back and forth between time periods/locations, and may focus on a key theme, event, life-choice, etc.) or biography/autobiography (generally covers a person or group’s history from beginning to end, focused more on facts and chronology).  If needed, I will conduct further historical/genealogical research to add background and context to your stories. The final project may range from a text-only booklet to a published book that includes photographs.
